ELLEN JOHANSEN'S PAINTINGS are primarily landscape-inspired abstract and semi-abstract fields of colour in which textures, patterns, and colour relationships observed in nature are explored in her artworks. Painting expressively rather than realistically is a way for Ellen to convey some of the feeling of energy and light she experiences in nature and in special wilderness places.
For Ellen the process of creating her artworks is one of magnifying visual elements to augment an “up close” view that is intricate and flowing. Conveying a heightened sense of immersion in the spectacle of nature itself is her constant goal. Ellen believes that, rather than distancing ourselves from what is real, the abstract field of perception can serve as a contemplative medium that enhances our feeling of relationship with nature, and with all things.
Ellen’s paintings can be viewed at Artbay Gallery, Queenstown, the Waiheke Community Art Gallery and Goldwater Estate (The University of Auckland), Waiheke Island, Auckland. Her paintings are in private collections in New Zealand and the United States. She undertakes commissions related to her sources of inspiration.
